Main Street Community

The central business district of Waynesboro is a National and a Virginia accredited Main Street community.  Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc (WDDI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Virginia Main Street Organization dedicated to the economic and cultural revitalization of downtown. WDDI follows the Main Street Four Point Approach® of organization, promotion, economic restructuring, and design.  Volunteer committees in each of the four areas work diligently to promote living, working, shopping, and entertainment in downtown.  WDDI is also a leader or active participant in many long range city initiatives and is instrumental in organizing several annual events.

Current Key Projects Include:

Organization:  Organization establishes consensus and cooperation by building partnerships among the various groups that have a stake in the commercial district.
This committee is currently compiling results of a recent downtown survey and constituents’ meeting for a report to the city and revisiting our ongoing Review and Analysis for unfinished and additional projects.

Promotion: Creates a positive image that will rekindle community pride and improve consumer and investor confidence in the commercial district.
Our immediate goal is to shift the perception of downtown by developing a brand that emphasizes our riverfront status and beautiful natural setting, the unique, high quality shopping, dining and entertainment experiences we offer, and our cultural and historic richness.  In conjunction with the Economic Restructuring committee, WDDI’s Promotions committee is working on a business recruitment event for Fall 2012 and has applied for grants to expand our YouTube downtown video campaign.  This committee works with the News Virginian on a monthly downtown page and explores group marketing opportunities to promote the central business district.

Economic Restructuring:  Strengthens the community's existing economic assets while diversifying its economic base.
This committee is developing a “green gateway” business cluster and targeting the outdoor recreation and tourism market.  We are working on a business recruitment event to be held in the fall while supporting our existing businesses and offering assistance to new businesses..

Design: Creates a safe, inviting environment for shoppers, workers, and visitors.  The Design committee works with downtown property owners and businesses to improve the general appearance of buildings in the central business district. Local Facade and Sidewalk / Landscaping grants are available to assist owners.

The City of Waynesboro is pursuing renewed life for its Downtown, with a path directed at building momentum for entrepreneurial opportunity, attracting new Downtown residents, and developing a draw for tourists.  learn more about downtown revitalization projects.
